Withee Malcolm Architects is planning a seven-story apartment building on a tight urban infill site in East Hollywood, a neighborhood that is experiencing a development boom. Facing Santa Monica Boulevard, the building is designed to fully utilize the site, deploying a Mondrian inspired facade to reduce the sense of scale. The contemporary architecture plays with hierarchy, articulation, color and the introduction of the Juliet balconies to scale down the mass of the structure.

The building wraps around a central courtyard on the six residential floors above the ground-level parking and street-facing retail. Visible from the street, the courtyard also provides a surprise break in the facade. The complex comprises 177, one- and two-bedroom units ranging in size from 600 to 1000 square feet, 5,500 square feet of retail space and two levels of parking. Residents will enjoy a fitness center, clubroom and co-working spaces as well as a roof deck with lounge areas and space for grilling.

Just a block from the Vermont/Santa Monica Metro stop and close to a mix of retail, the multifamily complex is an early model in the transition to greater residential density in the City of Los Angeles.
